Jay-Z, Diddy, Kanye West, T.I. and more have been chosen to help re-launch the upcoming King Magazine Winter 2010 issue with a “Greatest Stories Ever Told” feature.

While details are still emerging, the issue’s cover was released online today.

Supermodel Rosa Acosta graces the special edition of King magazine called the ‘The women of king’ with 82 Bangin’ Beauties including Shakur Sozahdah, Bria Myles, StarFace, Marisa Elise, Sasha Del Valle, Briana Loyd. King Magazine shut down its operations last March.

We don’t often post rumors, despite the number of them that cross our desks daily (many of which end up being true). I felt like posting this one though. We just got word that KING Magazine (aka Butts and Rims) is closing shop, not even releasing it’s next issue. In this strained economy, the already dying print format is suffering big time. It is upsetting to hear of people losing jobs, but can this be considered a victory for women (in particular black women) who struggle against objectification at every turn? I have to admit, I enjoy the images, but I know it can’t really be good for raising the standards of our society. What do you think? (Okay Player)

After four years as Executive Editor of KING Magazine, St. Lucia-born, Queens-bred journalist Jermaine Hall has taken the reins as Editor-in-Chief of the Men’s magazine Hugh Hefner dubbed “the Black Playboy”. In this week’s 24 Hour Grind Jermaine weighs in with his favorite KING moments, what direction the magazine is going in and things every EIC should know to turn out an eye-catching publication. Lil Wayne

Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne has shared his thoughts on what his possible career move would have been without hip-hop and said he saw himself studying law.

Speaking with television personality Mo’ Nique, Weezy explained the importance of having a proper education.

“School,” Wayne said about what he would do without a rap career. “I would probably still be in school because I would probably be studying something like law. No [I wouldn't want to be lawyer], but that’s probably what I would be doing. I like to be powerful and that’s probably something I would have done if I wouldn’t had done rapping.” (“The Mo’ Nique Show”)

Wayne promoted a “Get Schooled: You Have The Right” television program earlier this year.

“Growing up in a tough neighborhood is something I know a little about,” Weezy said in the commercial’s intro. “It’s not easy and you have to rise up and stand out. Right now, fewer than one in ten lower income students can expect to earn a bachelor’s degree. Odds like that, a better life seems harder to come by. America needs a stronger educational system and the time is now for bold reform. We owe the next generation a brighter future. Motivate. Educate. Elevate. Get Schooled.” (YouTube)

Weezy also attended the University of Houston in 2005 to further his own studies.

In January, Wayne started classes at the University of Houston, where he’s majoring in political science. He takes classes including psychology on Tuesday and Thursday, and the rest of the time he spends devoted to music — and sneaking in some studying. Wayne settled on UH because it’s not too far from his native New Orleans, but far enough that he won’t be distracted by all his hometown family and friends. He also says he’s been hanging out in Houston for years and considers H-Town a second home. (VH1)

He recently shared his post-rap career game plan in an interview.

“I always said I ain’t wanna do this no more after 35, I ain’t wanna do it no more,” Wayne revealed in an interview with radio personality Tim Westwood. “So any time before 30 and 35, I might give it up. [But now] I gotta work as hard as I can so I ain’t gotta look back. [When I retire, I'll] do something else, I’m gonna retire from this and probably jump into some ownership of some sports team or you know, I’m very heavy into sports. Any sport. [I'd want ownership] of the team. It doesn’t matter, it could be basketball, it could be baseball, of course it wouldn’t be baseball, there’s too much money to own that, but it could be basketball or football, it wouldn’t matter. Trey Songz Vs R. Kelly

R&B singer Trey Songz has died down past reports of trying to ignite a music beef with hitmaker R. Kelly despite harsh words directed toward him on his “Death of Kells” record last summer.

According to Songz, he is looking beyond Kelly and is setting up his follow-up to 2009’s Ready.

“It wasn’t a beef,” Trey smiled in an interview. “It was me telling R. Kelly to take the d*mn Auto-Tune off his voice, which he did on his album. His album is good. I’m trying to make sure I have an album out ASAP. I ain’t gonna tell you how soon, though. It’s not gonna be two years. I wanna use the same recipe I’ve been using. If anybody is added, it’ll be for real purpose. I spoke to Pharrell. I told him I’m getting in, Timbaland as well — both huge Virginian-grown producers. I definitely would love to work with them. But Troy Taylor I’ve been working with since the beginning of my career. Plus Bryan-Michael Cox I’ve had a couple hits with. I definitely wanna make sure we use the same chemistry.” (MTV)

He recently shared his reaction to rap newcomer Drake crowning him the greatest R&B singer of their generation.

“It made me feel great, Drake’s my brother so he’s going to say that about me,” Songz explained in an interview. “I’ll do whatever it takes to make his words [true] and to bring his words to life. I feel like it takes a lot to be the number one R&B singer. I mean, I’m the number one R&B singer right now. I would say that as far as right now, current times hottest artist right now in the moment, but I think it takes a lot of consistency, it takes longevity and a lot more than what I’ve done in the past year…I’m not the greatest right now, I will say that, but I will be… At this point I feel like R. Kelly knows if he was to step in that arena with me as far as lyrically, wordplay or metaphorically in that arena after the way I came on ‘Death of Kells.’ Kellis is older, he’s an old man.” (Global Grind)

R.Kelly revealed his feelings about Songz’ diss, “Death of Kells,” last summer.

“When you’re a king…I don’t get into the challenges anymore,” Kells told a panel of journalists. “What is an elephant gonna do when an ant or a fly lands on them? Those guys got some growing up to do. That’s something I would have answered 20 years ago.” (SOHH On The Scene)

Songz expressed his issues with Kells in a blog posting earlier this summer.

“When I heard Jay-Z’s “Death of Autotune” my first thought was when will R. Kelly stop using it,” he wrote. “The King of R&B with a autotune filled mixtape (not to mention a auto tuned “Double Up” album) disappoints me. Clipse

The Clipse have lashed back at the media’s perception of their Cam’ron “Popeyes” collaboration music video being racially offensive after censoring out the words “Obama’s Fried Chicken” in the opening scene.

For Pusha T, he felt the screen shot was only being honest by using the restaurant name in the video and denied any racist relations.

“It’s fu*kin’ crazy!,” Pusha explained in an interview. “And all it is – to me, Obama’s Fried Chicken was nothing racist about that, it’s just the fact that he was elected President and in celebration that chicken shack or whatever it was changed its name to that. Whoopty-f*ckin’-do. But [it's] the same thing [as the 'Jews made me' line]. Jewish people, I mean, like they don’t run the record industry? Like what, I can’t say that? I mean, I don’t know that a lot of…ya know, c’mon! It’s their business! But it’s like yo, look what they made me. And I’m saying that I’m – It’s like pompous, like yo they have created…I’m in this industry and they’ve created me and this industry and look how arrogant I am. Like you sorta gotta take it in the whole context of the – not just that one line, you gotta sorta take the full [line] before it and the two after it.” (Hip Hop DX)

Concerns grew when the restaurant’s name was blurred.

A restaurant in the Brooklyn, New York neighborhood of Brownsville that re-named itself “Obama Fried Chicken” in March is back in the spotlight after it appeared in — and then disappeared from — the music video by the rap duo Clipse. (Huffington Post)

The location’s recently changed title has drawn talks within its community.

According to Brokelyn, the restaurant’s name was scrubbed from the video when it played on MTV because the owner would not sign the record label’s location agreement allowing the restaurant to be shown in the video. Several New York City restaurants calling themselves “Obama Fried Chicken” first raised eyebrows when they were accused of playing to racial stereotypes and efforts arose to force Mohammad Jabbar, the owner of the Brownsville restaurant, to change the name. Pusha T recently spoke with SOHH about being a Killa fan.

“This is really like our second time trying to get Cam,” Pusha told SOHH. “We really tried to get Cam on ‘Grindin” remix and he didn’t do it. We’ve always been a fan of Cam — he’s dope at what he does, but beyond that, just at how he made — he created this cult following. Just his creativity is nuts. So we reached out to him and we got an amazing record…I think this is gonna be groundbreaking. In making this album, we were like, really trying to make sure we were in every part of the country. And with this record right here, I think I have a record that will totally, totally just go crazy on New York radio. It’s just something I always wanted to make. I’m from Virginia, so when I come to New York it’s always that record that just runs Hot 97 or [Power] 105 and I wanted to make one of those. We’re definitely in talks [of making a music video] with this one.” (SOHH)

Black Wall Street leader Game has kept fans updated with the latest R.E.D. Album details by explaining what effects having no current rap beefs has had on his fourth solo project.

Along with the album information, the West Coast rapper also described his relationship with the project’s executive producer, Pharrell Williams.

“The R.E.D. Album has presented me the opportunity to make the type of music I’ve always wanted to make and I’m free,” he explained in an interview. “I have no beefs and there’s nothing holding me back. I’m just having fun in the studio and I’m just recording man. I’m having the time of my life. Pharrell is my best hip-hop friend to date. Working with him has been nothing short of a catastrophic portion and every day that I can get in with that cat is different.” (Metro Mix)

He previously reflected on the music’s soulful sounds.

“The R.E.D. Album is a little soulful,” Game said in an interview. “It’s crazy because it could be pre-Documentary, and it could be post-R.E.D. Album, like it’s early and late. It’s early and late, so it’s just on time. If you could understand that. It’s like I’m raw. Like [on] some of the songs my flow is as raw as before I got with Dre…Then the songs are so big and melodic and so music-filled that you could tell that I’ve been around for a while…So, you know, that’s the vibe and it’s soulful, but it’s still right where you need it to be. It’s not too sample-heavy and not just that soulful where it takes away from what I do, and it isn’t gonna bore you or tire you out. This album is going to be incredible, man, and I would say it’s going to be my best album.” (MTV)

Game also said the project could be one of his most lyrical records to date.

“The album will be out later this year,” Game said in an interview last week. “I know people say it all the time, this album re-rooted me, took me back to The Documentary days and this might be my hardest-spitting album. Can’t wait to finish that, the anticipation level is through the roof. I’ma give the people what they need.” (103 Jams)

Earlier this month, he revealed Justin Timberlake’s involvement on the album.

“Yeah, Justin Timberlake came through last night,” Game revealed in an interview. “It just, the vibe changed. It went to where I could see Grammy awards. I had a really dope energy from him just being in the booth last night. Pharrell didn’t call him, I don’t know how he fell through but he fell through man. Two JT’s in the studio at the same time and the PW, it’s gonna be classic. Justin Timberlake is big sh*t man. Everybody listens to Justin Timberlake — from little white girls from Malibu to chicks in the hood. The songs he comes out with to the features on Timbaland’s album, and working with Pharrell in the past and all the way back to my little sister loving her N Sync CDs.” (Rap-Up)

AZ

With recent talks of an AZ and Cormega collaboration album, SOHH hit up the Brooklyn, New York-based rap veteran to find out if the duet project is a true possibility.

While AZ said he is open to the idea, no official talks have taken place as of this month.

“I’m not sure,” AZ said about the chances of a collaboration album. “I mean, anything is possible but we haven’t spoke on it yet. But you know, it ‘can’ happen. I mean, anything is possible, me and Cormega haven’t really built on it, we haven’t really sat down and patched things out but Mega is a cool brother, you know what I’m saying, especially with his music. So you know, anything is possible.” (SOHH)

Mega recently said a collaboration album with AZ could be put into the works.

“I just got off the phone with AZ last night, and I just came back from Europe with AZ,” Mega said in an interview. “We was talking about doing some sh*t and last year we was talking about doing the album. But you know, it just never materialized because I was too busy doing what I was doing. Both of us were grinding and didn’t put too much emphasis to it, and to be 100 percent real with you, we wanted to make sure it was with the right label. We ain’t trying to just put our sh*t out with anybody. So that is something that could happen. It could definitely happen.” (All Hip Hop)

Aside from Mega, AZ previously hit up SOHH to discuss his relationship with Nas.

“I mean, I reached out to him, uhm, I think he’s going through a couple of whirls, he’s going through a lot of situations so we haven’t really sat down and politic’ed and talked about everything,” AZ explained. “Actually, I did reach out for this Doe Or Die 2, that’s what I’m working on, the Doe Or Die 2 stuff. Raekwon did the Cuban Linx [2], and The Blueprint 3 and the Carter III and IV, so them sequels do good in the marketplace. So I’m trying to do this Doe Or Die 2, I reached out to him, I haven’t gotten feedback as of yet, but like I said, look at what he’s going through.” (SOHH)

Prior to being called off at the last minute, AZ was set to make a mini-Firm reunion last week in New York City with Foxy Brown.

Fans waited on line yesterday for hours to catch the show to no avail. Yet the concert was canceled after there was a dispute between the rap vet and the promoter of the show. XXLMag.com spoke to Larry Gold, a publicist at the venue, who assures ticket holders that they will be reimbursed. “95-99 percent of our shows we are dealing directly dealing with either the agent or manager,” Gold explained. “And this is one of those shows that went through a middle party. So other than we are reaching out to the promoter today to find out really what happened. Sadly to say we are really in the dark.” (XXL Mag)

Jermaine Dupri

Music mogul Jermaine “JD” Dupri has revealed his personal reasons for not visiting incarcerated rapper/associate Da Brat and suggested the public should mind their own business.

Although JD has not seen her in-person, the former Island Def Jam president said he has found other ways to stay in contact.

“I spoke to her via letters back and forth and she’s good. She’s ready to come home and do what she gotta do,” Jermaine Dupri told V-103’s Ryan Cameron. “We are basically on the move to try and get her out…Those [critics], they don’t really know me like that to say nothing about what I’m doing with my personal situation with Da Brat. When Brat come home, I am going to be the person that takes care of her and make sure she gets back on her feet and do what she gotta…that’s just like everybody talking about Tiger Woods. We know nothing about the situation and everybody should shut up…I felt a certain way about seeing Brat in jail. That’s my little sister and I don’t really want to deal with that situation like that. I would prefer dealing with getting her out and seeing that day as opposed to going to see her…only reason I am saying this on the air is because I explained this to Brat. In my letter, I let her know the same thing.” (All Hip Hop)

She was given a three year prison sentence last year on an assault conviction.

Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris, copped a guilty plea to aggravated assault today (August 22) in a DeKalb County courtroom. In addition to the jail time, Superior Court Judge Gail Flake also sentenced the rapper to seven years probation and 200 hours of community service. Upon leaving the courtroom the popular ’90s rapper – known for her collaborations with hip-hop mogul Jermaine Dupri as well as her stints in a string of VH1 reality shows – appeared confident. “I love y’all,” she said to about six weeping relatives as they replied, “We love you too.” (Atlanta Journal-Constitution)

The time stemmed from a 2007 physical confrontation with another female.

Da Brat got into a heated confrontation with one of the club’s waitresses and was accused of striking the woman in the face with a bottle of rum, causing numerous cuts on her face. The waitress was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said the Halloween attack wasn’t the first time Da Brat and the victim were involved in a physical altercation. (MTV)

In light of artists like Lil Boosie and Da Brat doing time, SOHH spoke with Lil Scrappy to get his take on rappers being placed behind bars.

“I don’t know how to react cuz, ’cause it’s like d*mn, if anybody noticed, this is the most rappers that done got locked up,” Scrappy explained. “I’ma tell you what it is though, it’s from certain n*ggas feeling like ‘I’m a rapper, I can do whatever the f*ck I wanna do,’ and not saying I’m a boss and do whatever I wanna do. If you a boss and you doing whatever you wanna do, you still gonna do it where you gonna be good, you not gonna just be ‘Oh, I f*cked up cuz, now I got eight years.’ Nah, not like that, they gonna be like ‘Eh, I did whatever I had to do, I’m good.’ N*ggas be going out their character, cuz. They doin’ sh*t they wouldn’t even do and they get f*cked up.” (SOHH)

Killer Mike

Grand Hustle’s Killer Mike has clarified past remarks of citing 50 Cent and Jay-Z for copying his style of bringing back “hardcore” hip-hop by offering up an apology.

Mike says his words were misunderstood by readers thinking he was sparking a rap beef.

“I misspoke,” Mike explained in an interview. “It was about hardcore hip-hop. I had just come off stage and a lot of times, because I know a lot of you guys asking me questions, I tend to talk like I’m talking about a friend and it appeared like I had been — not disrespected but being disrespectful to Jay and 50, but I done got money with both of them. Jay allowed me an opportunity to make money. He let me on The Blueprint 2. 50 has me open — for him. First thing I want to say, I want to apologize for that even appearing disrespectful. But what I really wanna say to the audience is, hardcore hip-hop was, is and will always be and even though I appreciate the bigger guys turning to that, so that more people can pay more attention to it, that doesn’t disallow the audience from finding dope sh*t.” (Hip Hop Wired)

Mike previously explained why he respected emcees like Jay but felt they were following his blueprint.

“I don’t wanna hear none of that bullsh*t from none of the n*ggas,” Mike said in an interview. “I dropped I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II last year. If you wanna hear hardcore hip-hop, go to the store, go get I Pledge Allegiance to the Grind II…I don’t wanna hear that bullsh*t, these n*ggas who got millions of dollars talking about bringing sh*t back. They ain’t bringing sh*t back. It’s here — you looking at it….Buy me…When that Killer Mike drops, hardcore hip-hop will be back for the second, third time. You know, the same guy that said ‘rap is dead’ three years before Nas said it. I’m here. F*ck with me. Jay dropped ‘D.O.A.’ and everybody went crazy. And I love Jay. 50 said his War Angel mixtape would pave the way for hardcore hip-hop’s return last summer.

“I think it will change [rappers' direction] when they see the public respond to it in a positive way that’ll actually allow them to be creative in different areas again and just do what they want,” Fif explained. “It’s all by example. When Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ came out, everything shifted, because they watching it be the largest debuting album to date. 822,000 copies the first week and then another 800,000 copies the next week, they go, ‘Ah man, that’s what I wanna do.’ And then the other artists start doing their version of 50 Cent, we don’t want that but we want them to be able to write their actual story or what they see going on around them.” (This Is 50)

Jay explained his motivation behind “Death of Autotune” earlier this year.

“I’m just saying, let’s move it forward,” Jay said in a phone interview. “The guys who did it, did it great. If you listen to T-Pain, like you know, he does great melodies. You listen to Kanye [West], if you listen to ‘Say You Will’ or ‘Heartbreak,’ great melodies. ‘Lollipop’ was a fantastic melody. Now everybody can’t do it, let them guys do it, they got their lil’ niche. Now lets move on… My intention was just to draw a line in the sand, ‘this is what I do.’” (Miss Info)

Buju Banton

Reggae star Buju Banton appeared before a judge this week for a hearing on drug trafficking charges that resulted in him getting transferred from a Miami to Tampa, Florida district.

According to reports, Banton was in court Wednesday (December 16).

Wearing a beige jail jumpsuit and shackles, Banton, 36, sat expressionless in the front row of the Miami federal courtroom, his trademark dreadlocks pulled back off his narrow face and rolled into a bundle. Occasionally he looked out into the courtroom where, in the back row, his publicist and two members of the local Jamaican Consulate observed the proceedings. The only time Banton spoke was when he uttered his real name and age, and confirmed to U.S. Magistrate Judge William Turnoff that he was indeed waiving his bail hearing in Miami to be transferred to Tampa. He will now be transferred up north to Tampa.

After waiving his bail hearing in federal court on Wednesday, Banton will now be transferred to Tampa, where the indictment was filed. Banton faces the charges with two conspirators who, collectively, are also charged with possessing a firearm while carrying out the drug trafficking offense. (Spinner)

An attorney for Banton shared his comments after the hearing.

“He believes that because the indictment was filed out of Tampa, that’s where the case should be defended,” Banton’s attorney, Herbert E. Walker III, said after the hearing. “He’s a very spiritual person. He has a lot of faith in God. He’s confident he’s going to be exonerated.” (Associated Press)

He was taken in by authorities last week.

The four-time Grammy nominee is accused along with two others of allegedly attempting to buy more than five kilograms of cocaine from an undercover law enforcement officer in Sarasota last week. Banton was arrested Thursday at his home in Tamarac. The charges carry a maximum sentence of over 20 years in prison. (Carribean World News)
